Hawthorn AFL Stars Dylan Moore and Connor Macdonald Arrested in US Off-Season Incident

Bombshell details have emerged regarding an off-season scandal involving Hawthorn Football Club players Dylan Moore and Connor Macdonald, who were arrested overseas following a wild night out. According to exclusive reporting from 7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary, the two Hawthorn stars spent a night behind bars on the other side of the world, with significant repercussions for Moore's leadership role at the club.

Night in Jail and Leadership Fallout

In the aftermath of the incident, Dylan Moore, aged 26, was stripped of his vice-captaincy at Hawthorn. The arrest occurred during a trip to Phoenix, Arizona, where Moore was engaging in pre-season training. While there was an initial charge related to drug paraphernalia, this charge was subsequently dismissed, leaving the focus on the circumstances of the arrest itself.

Moore has now publicly shared details of the event, describing it as a split-second decision that has haunted him for nearly four months. He expressed deep regret and acknowledged the foolishness of his actions, which led to an overnight stay in a police cell.

Moore's Account of the Arrest

In an interview with 7NEWS, Moore recounted the sequence of events that led to his arrest. "I was in the US, I was out having a few drinks, and made a foolish mistake, decided to get on a scissor lift and next think I know the cops are there telling me to get off, and I got off, and next thing I know, I'm in police custody," Moore explained. A scissor lift is typically associated with construction sites, highlighting the unusual nature of the incident.

Reflecting on the experience, Moore stated, "It's something that I'll always regret. A foolish mistake has led to a night in a jail cell and many regrets." He described feeling a mix of disappointment, regret, stress, and anxiety during the ordeal, particularly worrying about how his friends and family in Australia would react.

Immediate Club Response and Personal Impact

Moore emphasized that he made immediate contact with Hawthorn Football Club following the arrest. "It was direct communication with the footy club straight away. They were firm but so supportive to me. The last four months communication has been really steady," he said. However, calls home after the incident were described as "really tough" and "scary," with Moore noting the helplessness of being on the other side of the world.

He expressed remorse towards coach Sam Mitchell and fellow leaders at the club, acknowledging that he had let them down. "I've disappointed him, and the fellow leaders," Moore admitted. "I was vice-captain at the time, and I should have recognised the situation and known the situation and consequences, and risks. And having Connor there with me, as an older player, I should know (better). I feel like I've let the leaders down and Connor down."

Leadership Changes and Legal Resolution

As a result of the incident, Moore confirmed he no longer holds the vice-captaincy or any official leadership titles at Hawthorn. Despite this, he remains committed to contributing to the team. "That doesn't mean I'm not going to lead - we've got two great captains ... I'll do anything for them, put my best foot forward to help them and help get Hawthorn a flag," he told 7NEWS. "I feel like we've got two amazing co-captains ... there's no two better guys."

Regarding the legal aspects, Moore indicated that most of the work had been handled through the club over the past four months. He completed a diversion program, which involved 16 hours of education on alcohol and relationships, and is set to undertake community service. "I've done all I can now and (I need to) just put it to one side, be the best person I can be, help the football club to finals, premiership and each day play my role," he said, expressing hope that the incident is behind him.

Moving Forward with Club Support

Moore highlighted the strong support he has received from Hawthorn throughout this challenging period. "It's been so tough, but I've felt so supported at the football club. We've been in constant communication - and I feel like I've been so supported," he stated. He aims to focus on personal growth and his roles as a mate, partner, and family member, while contributing positively to the team's aspirations for finals and premiership success.
