Melbourne's Brunton Avenue Renamed Barassi Way in Tribute to AFL Legend

One of Melbourne's most iconic roads is receiving a new name to honour the legacy of AFL icon Ron Barassi. Brunton Avenue, which runs along the south side of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), is being officially unveiled as Barassi Way this Friday. This change serves as the latest tribute to one of Australian football's most celebrated figures, whose impact on the sport remains unparalleled.

A Fitting Honour for a Football Giant

Barassi Way stretches from Jolimont Street in East Melbourne to Punt Road, bordering Richmond and Cremorne. This route flanks the legendary sporting precinct where Barassi played 115 of his 254 VFL games for Melbourne and Carlton. Beyond his playing career, Barassi coached 515 games across four clubs at the highest level, securing an impressive 10 premierships as both a player and coach. In 1996, he was elevated as one of the 12 inaugural Legends in the Australian Football Hall of Fame, cementing his status in the annals of the sport.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan emphasised the significance of this renaming, stating, "Ron Barassi was an icon of Victoria and Australian Rules Football, so it's only fitting to have his name memorialised next to the home of football." Minister for Sport Steve Dimopoulos added, "Barassi Way will ensure that future generations remember Ron Barassi's name and the immense legacy he has left on football and Melbourne."

Historical Context and Community Support

Originally, Brunton Avenue was named after Sir William Brunton, who served on the city council for 25 years, including a term as Lord Mayor from 1923 to 1926. Current Lord Mayor Nick Reece highlighted the broader significance of the change, noting, "As a foundational figure of Australian Rules football, a coach who revolutionised the game, and a champion for social justice and unity, Ron Barassi's story reflects who we are and aspire to be. Renaming this street beside the MCG is a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy."

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon also praised the decision, remarking, "Ron Barassi is a Legend of our game, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of Australian football."

Timing and Additional Tributes

The unveiling of Barassi Way on Friday holds special meaning, as it would have been Ron Barassi's 90th birthday. Barassi passed away in September 2023 at the age of 87, receiving a state funeral at the MCG. In further recognition of his contributions, the AFL initiated the Ron Barassi Medal, awarded annually to the premiership captain or captains, ensuring his name continues to inspire within the sport.

This renaming not only honours a football legend but also reinforces Melbourne's deep connection to Australian Rules Football, celebrating a man whose influence transcended the game itself.
