West Australian Football commissioner Brad Wira has been officially appointed as the sporting body's chief executive officer, a move that was heavily anticipated following reports earlier this week. This confirmation comes after a thorough selection process, highlighting Wira's distinguished career in both football and business sectors.
Transition and Background
Wira steps into the role previously held by Michael Roberts, who resigned last month after a five-year tenure to explore new career opportunities. The transition marks a significant shift for the organisation, with Wira bringing a unique blend of experience from his time as a professional footballer and a business leader.
As a former player for Fremantle and the Western Bulldogs, Wira has deep roots in the sport. His business acumen is equally impressive, having spent over two decades as a principal and private wealth adviser at Shadforth Financial Group. Additionally, he has served as an adviser to the AFL Players' Association and AFL Coaches' Association Financial Education Programs, as well as the AFL Industry Superannuation Fund, demonstrating his commitment to financial and educational initiatives within the football community.
Qualifications and Governance Experience
Wira holds a Bachelor of Business with a major in management and has earned a company directors qualification from the Australian Institute of Company Directors, underscoring his preparedness for executive leadership. His involvement in football governance is extensive; he was appointed to the WA Football board in December 2024 and participated in a review of the WA talent pathway alongside vice chair Dixie Marshall, showcasing his dedication to developing the sport at all levels.
In line with organisational protocols, Wira will resign from his position on the WA Football board, with a casual appointment set to fill the vacancy. He is scheduled to officially assume the CEO role on May 4, ensuring a smooth handover and continuity in leadership.
