Police in Far North Queensland have made a significant breakthrough, arresting a man and a teenage boy after a targeted operation led to the discovery of stolen firearms and a quantity of dangerous drugs.
Weapons and Drugs Uncovered in Suburban Raid
The operation unfolded on Tuesday, 23 April 2024, when officers from the Cairns Property Crime Unit executed a search warrant at a residence in the suburb of Manoora. The warrant was part of an ongoing investigation into property-related offences in the region.
During the thorough search of the property, police allege they located two firearms that had been reported as stolen. Alongside the weapons, a quantity of what is believed to be dangerous drugs was also seized. The discovery prompted immediate action from the attending officers.
A 39-year-old Manoora man was arrested and charged with a total of 12 offences. The serious charges laid against him include two counts of unlawful possession of weapons, one count of possessing a shortened firearm, and one count of receiving tainted property. He also faces multiple drug-related charges, such as possessing dangerous drugs and anything used in the commission of a crime.
Teenager Also Faces Court Following Arrest
The police operation did not stop with the arrest of the adult male. A 17-year-old Bentley Park boy was also arrested at the scene. The teenager has been charged with one count of receiving tainted property and one count of possessing anything used in the commission of a crime.
Both the man and the teenage boy were denied police bail and were scheduled to appear before the Cairns Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 24 April 2024, to answer to the charges. The swift progression to court underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the alleged offences.
Police Send a Strong Message to the Community
Following the arrests, a spokesperson for the Cairns Property Crime Unit emphasised the commitment of police to targeting those involved in criminal activities that impact community safety. The seizure of stolen firearms is a particular priority, as such weapons can pose a significant risk if they remain in circulation on the streets.
This successful operation highlights the ongoing efforts of Queensland Police to combat property crime and the illegal possession of weapons and drugs in the Cairns area. The community is reminded that information from the public is often vital in these investigations. Police encourage anyone with information about illegal firearms or drug activity to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
The outcomes of this raid demonstrate a proactive approach to law enforcement in Far North Queensland, aiming to disrupt criminal networks and enhance public safety for all residents.
