QPS officer suspended over alleged sexual assault

A member of the Queensland Police Service's Protective Service Group has been suspended from duty and is set to face court after being charged over an alleged sexual assault.

Officer Charged Following Investigation

The Queensland Police Service confirmed the officer was charged on Tuesday, 19 March 2024. The charges relate to an alleged incident of a sexual nature. Following standard procedure, the officer was immediately suspended from official duties with the Queensland Police Service.

The officer is a member of the Protective Service Group, a unit responsible for providing security and protective services for government buildings and officials. The QPS stated the matter was now before the courts and therefore they could not provide further specific commentary on the details of the allegations.

Internal Investigation and Court Proceedings

The charges followed an investigation by the Queensland Police Service's Ethical Standards Command, which oversees matters of professional conduct within the force. This demonstrates the QPS's internal mechanisms for addressing serious allegations against its own members.

The suspended officer is scheduled to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court at a later date to answer to the charges. The location of the alleged offence has not been publicly disclosed by authorities at this stage.

QPS Statement and Community Assurance

In an official statement, a spokesperson for the Queensland Police Service emphasised the seriousness with which the organisation treats such allegations. The spokesperson reiterated that all QPS employees are expected to maintain the highest standards of behaviour, both on and off duty.

The QPS also sought to reassure the public that the suspension and court process reflect its commitment to accountability. "The Queensland Police Service is committed to ensuring the integrity of its workforce and will take appropriate action when allegations of misconduct are made," the statement read.

The case highlights the protocols in place for dealing with criminal allegations involving police personnel, ensuring they are subject to the same legal processes as any other member of the community. The outcome of the court proceedings will determine the officer's future with the service.
