The Townsville District Court convened on May 11, 2025, hearing a range of criminal matters including assault, drug trafficking, and property offences. Presiding Judge Michael Byrne handed down sentences and adjourned several cases for further submissions.
Assault and Drug Offences
In a notable case, 34-year-old Marcus Allen pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm. The court heard that Allen struck the victim multiple times during a dispute outside a local pub. Judge Byrne sentenced Allen to 18 months imprisonment, suspended after six months, with a two-year probation period. Allen was also ordered to attend anger management counselling.
Separately, 28-year-old Sarah Thompson faced charges of possessing a dangerous drug and supplying a controlled substance. Police found 50 grams of methylamphetamine in her vehicle during a routine traffic stop. Thompson, a first-time offender, received a 12-month intensive correction order and a fine of $2,000. The judge emphasised the seriousness of drug offences but noted her cooperation with authorities.
Property Crime and Fraud
In property-related matters, 41-year-old David Chen was convicted of fraud and stealing. Chen, a former accountant, embezzled over $150,000 from his employer over two years. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 18 months. The court ordered restitution of the stolen funds.
Another case involved 22-year-old Jessica Brown, who pleaded guilty to burglary and unlawful entry. Brown broke into a residential home and stole electronics valued at $5,000. She was sentenced to 12 months probation and 200 hours of community service. Judge Byrne noted her young age and lack of prior criminal history as mitigating factors.
Traffic Offences and Domestic Violence
The court also dealt with traffic offences, including a dangerous driving case. 30-year-old Liam O'Brien was charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing grievous bodily harm. The incident occurred when O'Brien sped through a red light, striking a pedestrian. He received a two-year suspended sentence and a five-year driving disqualification.
Domestic violence cases were also prominent. 45-year-old Robert Williams was convicted of breaching a domestic violence order and common assault. He was sentenced to six months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, and required to complete a men's behavioural change program.
The Townsville District Court will reconvene on May 18 for further hearings.
