An investigation into a man who has been missing for four months has taken a dark turn, with police now treating the case as a homicide. Wayne Pedro Morseu, 71, from Mackay, was reported missing by his family on November 10 last year.
Police Believe Death Occurred at Home
Detective Inspector Emma Novosel stated on Wednesday that investigations have led police to believe Morseu died at his home on Griffin St sometime after August 27, weeks before he was reported missing. While there were no obvious signs of a struggle at his unit, statements from local residents suggest his death occurred there.
His body remained at his home for an unknown period before being moved by a person or persons involved in his death, Novosel said.
Operation X-ray Skydrift Underway
The investigation, known as Operation X-ray Skydrift, has involved specialist police and State Emergency Services conducting land searches in bushland around West Mackay. At the moment, there are a number of persons of interest in the investigation. We have spoken to some of them and there are others we are still seeking to speak with, Novosel explained.
Currently, no one is in custody in relation to this investigation.
Appeal for Public Information
Police are appealing to the public for any information as Morseu’s body remains missing. We’re seeking information on behalf of Wayne’s family. Obviously they’re devastated about what’s happened to Wayne and they want some answers, Novosel said.
We would really like to provide those to them but also come to a resolution about Wayne’s death and where he is. Any piece of information, anything they’ve seen or heard, is really important — crucial — to progressing this investigation.
Crime Scenes and Forensic Testing
Crime scenes were declared at properties on River St and Griffin St in Mackay as detectives search for clues. Investigators have examined multiple locations, including the Griffin St unit, where a person of interest had been staying, and the River St property they later moved to, with forensic testing ongoing.
At this time we can’t say what the motive is or the reason for the death but certainly we’re keeping an open mind and we’ll examine all angles as information is provided to us, Novosel added.
Local Recognition and Urgent Call for Footage
Morseu was known locally for walking around the Griffin St area, making him identifiable to residents. Police are urging anyone with CCTV, dashcam footage, or personal knowledge to contact Crime Stoppers, Police Link, or their local station immediately.
