A mother and her teenage son have been injured after a car allegedly struck them while they were walking together in a shopping centre carpark, before fleeing the scene.
The 14-year-old boy remains in hospital following the alleged hit-and-run incident at a Gawler shopping centre in Adelaide’s north. Police report that a driver ploughed through multiple cars before hitting the teenager and his mother.
Just after midday, the driver of a black Volkswagen allegedly collided with three vehicles in the carpark, then struck the pair before speeding off. Fortunately, their injuries are not life-threatening.
A 41-year-old man from Lewiston has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Witness Malay Tewaiti condemned the driver’s actions, stating: “It’s just cowardly to leave the scene. The first thing you’d think to do would be to stop and make sure they’re OK.”
Police later arrested the man and charged him with dangerous driving and leaving the scene of a crash. He did not apply for bail and is expected to face court at a later date.
