E-bike rider dies in bus crash near Perth primary school

A 37-year-old man riding an electric bicycle has died following a collision with a bus outside a primary school in Perth's southern suburbs.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 3:30 PM on Thursday near the roundabout at Tunnicliffe Street and Parmelia Avenue in Parmelia, close to St Vincent's School.

Emergency services rushed the man to Rockingham Hospital, but he succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. The 59-year-old female bus driver and passengers aboard the orange bus were uninjured.

Police investigation underway

Major Crash investigators are currently examining the scene and appealing for any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers. A Western Australia Police spokesperson urged all motorists to exercise caution on the roads.

"Drive safely and keep in mind the wellbeing of yourself and others," the spokesperson said.

WA's rising road toll

The incident comes as Western Australia records a decade-high road toll, with 74 fatalities so far in 2026. The death also follows the WA Government's commitment to "nation-leading" eRideable safety reforms.

A parliamentary inquiry was launched after Perth father Thanh Phan was killed by a drunk e-scooter rider. The inquiry was later expanded when a 59-year-old was allegedly struck and killed by an electric off-road bike just months later.

Inquiry recommendations

The inquiry made 33 recommendations, including treating eRideables as motor vehicles for alcohol and drug testing, improving infrastructure, and reviewing penalties to reflect the risks of non-compliance.

The WA Government offered in-principle support to 32 recommendations but is seeking action from the federal government.
