Elderly Sydney Man Kidnapped in Mistaken Identity, Feared in Grave Danger
An 85-year-old man has been violently kidnapped from his home in a shocking case of mistaken identity, with disturbing footage emerging of him tied up and beaten. Chris Baghsarian, a widower, was dragged from his bedroom in North Ryde, Sydney, in the early hours of Friday morning.
Violent Home Invasion and Abduction
Three men broke into Baghsarian's home around 5am, waking neighbours with the sounds of breaking glass and cries for help. Police arrived to find signs of forced entry, indicating a brazen and aggressive attack. Detective Acting Superintendent Andrew Marks stated that Baghsarian was taken from his bedroom and bundled into a dark-coloured SUV.
Police have issued an urgent plea for his release, believing the kidnappers targeted the wrong person. "You tell us where he is, we'll do the rest. You have the wrong person," Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Marks emphasized.
Disturbing Footage and Underworld Links
Despite the plea, media have seen footage showing Baghsarian bound, beaten, and bloody. The video is believed to have been sent to a Sydney underworld figure now living overseas, whose family member was the intended target. Baghsarian and his family have no criminal ties, adding to the tragedy of the situation.
"His family are quite concerned," Marks said. "They're quite surprised that this has happened and what they want is a safe return of their father."
CCTV Evidence and Vehicle Discovery
CCTV footage from across the street captures a dark Toyota pulling into Northcott Street in North Ryde before the abduction. A man in high-visibility clothing is seen exiting the car, followed by an accomplice. Moments later, they are observed pushing the elderly man across the landing as the vehicle moves closer.
The SUV was later found burnt out in nearby North Turramurra, complicating the investigation. Police have grave concerns for Baghsarian's wellbeing, as he is frail and requires daily medication. Without it, his life could be in imminent danger.
Appeal for Safe Return and Medical Attention
Authorities are pleading for his release to ensure he receives urgent medical care. "Please release Mr Baghsarian. Take him to a hospital, take him to somewhere that's safe," Marks urged. "Being a hostage, we really fear for his safety and we're appealing for a very safe return and to get medical attention."
Investigations into the incident remain ongoing, with police urging anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers immediately.
