Italian Man Jailed for Attempted Ketamine Trafficking in Christmas Toys
Italian Jailed for Ketamine in Christmas Toys

An Italian national has been sentenced to prison after attempting to traffic a commercial quantity of a dangerous sedative concealed within Christmas soft toys sent to Australia.

Christmas Day Interception in Western Australia

The illicit scheme began to unravel on Christmas Day in 2023 when a suspicious package containing five soft toys arrived in Western Australia from Spain. Australian Border Force officers intercepted the shipment and discovered it contained 1.5 kilograms of high-purity ketamine cleverly hidden inside the festive items.

In a carefully orchestrated operation, authorities replaced the dangerous substance with an inert material before allowing the package to continue its journey to the intended destination. This tactical move enabled law enforcement to monitor the delivery while ensuring the drugs would not reach the community.

Coogee Raid Uncovers Operation

Australian Federal Police subsequently executed a search warrant at an address in Coogee, located in Perth's southern suburbs. During the raid, officers discovered the opened package on a table with some of the substituted drugs already removed from two of the soft toys.

"One bag of the substituted drugs was located on a set of scales, near a vacuum sealing machine," according to a joint statement from the AFP and Australian Border Force. This evidence suggested the recipients were preparing to distribute the substance before authorities intervened.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

The 29-year-old Italian man pleaded guilty to attempting to traffic a commercial quantity of a controlled drug and dealing with proceeds of crime. On Thursday, the Perth District Court delivered its verdict, sentencing him to a maximum of six years and eight months imprisonment.

The court determined he would become eligible for parole after serving three years and four months of his sentence. This sentencing follows the previous conviction of a second Italian national who received three years imprisonment for his involvement in the same criminal plot.

International Investigation Expands

The discovery of the Coogee-bound drug shipment triggered an extensive international investigation that ultimately led to the dismantling of an alleged Spanish-based transnational crime group. This organization was accused of trafficking illicit drugs into Australia through sophisticated concealment methods.

Spanish law enforcement authorities have since charged several individuals in Barcelona and Ibiza in connection with the operation, demonstrating the global reach of collaborative drug enforcement efforts.

Authorities Issue Stern Warning

AFP Detective Superintendent Peter Chwal condemned those involved in drug trafficking operations, stating: "The people involved in trafficking these kinds of hideous drugs into our country are driven by greed and have zero regard for the damage they cause."

He further explained the dangers of ketamine, noting: "Ketamine is a sedative used illicitly as a 'date rape' drug. Its dissociative effects block sensory brain signals and can cause memory loss, feelings of being detached from one's body and the inability to perceive dangers."

ABF Superintendent James Payne emphasized that the significant prison sentence should "serve as a warning to those seeking to exploit the postal system as a means to profit from illicit substances." This case highlights the ongoing vigilance of Australian authorities in intercepting drug shipments regardless of their creative concealment methods.
