Grandfather Admits to Pulling Gun in Kooragang Road Rage Incident
A 77-year-old grandfather from Ryde has confessed to brandishing a pistol during a heated road rage confrontation at Kooragang, leading to serious criminal charges. John Michael Fletcher, a retiree, was driving his Mercedes-Benz SLK250 convertible towards the Stockton Bridge on February 2 when the altercation erupted around 11.20am.
Details of the Confrontation and Crash
Fletcher began tailgating another vehicle, driven by a 56-year-old man, before overtaking him. Traffic congestion at a roundabout brought the two cars together again a few kilometres later. As they approached the bridge, the victim started to pass a slow truck in the right lane. Fletcher then accelerated harshly in the left lane, attempting to overtake as well, but crashed into the passenger side of the other car while trying to squeeze between the truck and the victim's vehicle.
Both drivers pulled over, and the victim confronted Fletcher, asking if he was f---ing right and expressing concern about the near-fatal crash. Fletcher responded dismissively, saying he didn't give a f---, according to court documents. The victim then called Fletcher a f---ing idiot, prompting Fletcher to retreat to his car.
Escalation with Firearm Threat
Thinking Fletcher was retrieving his identification, the victim went to get his wallet from his own car. However, upon returning, he saw Fletcher open a metal case in his boot and remove a pistol. The victim reported that Fletcher pointed the gun at him and threatened, I'll shoot you c---. In response, the victim pleaded, Are you serious? Over an accident. Please don't shoot me. I beg you. How about you get in your car and I'll get in my car and we will leave it at that?
Fletcher told him to f--- off, and the victim quickly got back into his car. Before driving away, he managed to discreetly photograph Fletcher holding the firearm and the registration plate of the Mercedes. He observed Fletcher tuck the pistol into his pants before the retiree drove off.
Police Response and Arrest
The victim immediately reported the incident to Waratah police station. Later that day, around 5pm, officers went to Fletcher's apartment in Ryde and arrested him. Police confirmed that Fletcher, who has a very limited criminal record, is the registered owner of a 9mm pistol, which was seized from his residence.
During an interview, Fletcher admitted to being involved in the crash and retrieving the gun from his car. He claimed he took out the firearm because he feared the victim was going to assault him and was abusing me and calling me all the names under the sun. Fletcher denied the gun was loaded and insisted he did not point it at the victim, stating he was scared primarily due to being called a f---ing idiot.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
Fletcher was charged, refused bail by police, and had his firearms licence suspended. He appeared in Burwood Local Court the following day and was granted bail under strict conditions, including a cash surety, regular reporting to police, and a prohibition on possessing firearms. In Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday, Fletcher pleaded guilty to being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and intimidation.
Currently on bail, Fletcher is scheduled to be sentenced in April. This case highlights the severe consequences of road rage escalating into violent threats, particularly involving firearms in community settings.
