Big Splash Water Park to Remain Closed This Summer, Owners Cite Vandalism and Repair Costs

The owners of Big Splash water park in Canberra's north have confirmed the park will not reopen this summer, citing the cost of repairing vandalism and aging infrastructure. The park was due to reopen by mid-November 2025 after being directed by ACT officials to repair and maintain the site, which has been closed since the summer of 2023-24.

Through consultant firm Purdon, the owners expressed regret over the decision, stating that significant vandalism and escalating repair costs made reopening the existing pool prohibitive. Purdon said it is focusing on a long-term plan that is financially sustainable and retains recreational uses, with no plans to re-zone the site. Plans under consideration include a 25-metre indoor/outdoor pool and an outdoor splash park.

ACT City Services Minister Tara Cheyne criticized the owners for what she called 'hollow-hearted efforts' to reopen the site, noting that Access Canberra has begun potential regulatory action to ensure the site is used only in accordance with its lease. The independent planning regulator can issue a Controlled Activity Order with a penalty of up to $48,600 or terminate the lease completely.

ACT Sport and Recreation Minister Yvette Berry confirmed that discussions about re-zoning the land for residential development have been underway, but the ACT government has ruled out any use other than recreational. Berry stressed that any plans are merely 'aspirations' and that the independent regulator is responsible for handling the lease.

Canberrans have expressed disappointment over the ongoing closure of the city's only water park, with some noting the need for pools in the inland city. Purdon has booked an appointment to present its concepts to the National Capital Design Review Panel and plans to share ideas with the community before Christmas, ahead of consultation in February 2026.
