ACT Ministers Yvette Berry and Tara Cheyne have issued a strong call for action on water safety after a recent incident at the Big Splash Water Park. The ministers emphasized the need for stricter regulations and increased public awareness to prevent future accidents.
Urgent Call for Enhanced Safety Measures
In a joint statement, Minister for Education and Early Childhood Development Yvette Berry and Minister for City Services Tara Cheyne highlighted the importance of water safety, particularly at public facilities like Big Splash. They urged the community and relevant authorities to prioritize safety measures to avoid tragedies.
The ministers pointed out that while Big Splash is a popular destination for families, the recent incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with water activities. They called for a comprehensive review of safety protocols and the implementation of additional safeguards.
Community and Government Collaboration
Berry and Cheyne stressed that ensuring water safety requires a collaborative effort between the government, facility operators, and the public. They encouraged visitors to remain vigilant and follow all safety guidelines while at the water park.
The ministers also announced plans to work closely with the operators of Big Splash to upgrade safety equipment and training for staff. This includes installing more prominent warning signs and providing additional life-saving devices around the park.
Public Awareness Campaign
To complement the regulatory changes, the ACT government will launch a public awareness campaign focused on water safety. The campaign will target families and children, providing educational materials on how to stay safe in and around water.
Yvette Berry stated, "We cannot afford to be complacent when it comes to water safety. Every precaution must be taken to ensure that families can enjoy facilities like Big Splash without fear." Tara Cheyne added, "Our goal is to create a culture of safety where everyone understands their role in preventing accidents."
The ministers' call to action comes as part of a broader initiative to improve safety standards across all public recreational facilities in the ACT. They expect to see immediate improvements at Big Splash and plan to extend similar measures to other water-based venues in the future.
