Two young sisters are fighting for their lives in hospital after a horrific multi-vehicle crash at a busy Sunshine Coast intersection on Tuesday.
Chaos at Banya Intersection Near Caloundra
The serious collision occurred around midday at Banya, near Caloundra. The crash involved four vehicles and left a total of seven people injured.
The two toddlers were passengers in a blue car driven by their mother when it was struck by a truck. The force of the impact pushed the car into a nearby building site.
Both girls sustained life-threatening injuries. Emergency paramedics provided critical treatment at the scene before rushing the sisters to hospital.
Critical Airlift to Brisbane Children's Hospital
One of the girls was first taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital for stabilisation. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later airlifted to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.
Her sister was also transported directly to the same specialist paediatric facility in Brisbane for urgent treatment. Both remain in a critical condition.
Five other people were injured in the collision, including the children's mother. All were taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
The mother, a woman in her thirties, suffered injuries to her head and chest. Another driver, a man in his sixties, is believed to have suffered a medical episode during the incident.

The Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit has taken charge of the investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision.
A witness to the crash, who identified himself as a close friend of the family, told reporters he had spoken with the girls' father, who was said to be in a state of shock.
