The search for a snorkeller who disappeared on New Year's Day has ended in tragedy, with police confirming the recovery of human remains believed to be the missing man.
New Year's Day Disappearance Sparks Major Search
Wen Ren Gu, 32, vanished while in the water at Ledge Point Beach, a popular coastal spot roughly 120 kilometres north of Perth. The young man, also known as Walter, had travelled from the city with friends on the morning of January 1st for a snorkelling trip to catch crayfish.
His sudden disappearance prompted an immediate and extensive search and rescue operation. Authorities deployed significant resources, including helicopters, drones, police divers, boats, and jet skis in a desperate bid to locate him. The intensive search continued for several days before being scaled back last Friday.
Tragic Discovery Ends Hope for Family
On Tuesday, police received a report that human remains had washed ashore at nearby Fence Reef Beach. While formal identification procedures are still underway, Western Australia Police stated they believe the remains are those of the 32-year-old man reported missing on Thursday, January 1st.
"His death is not being treated as suspicious," a police spokesperson confirmed. The discovery marks a heartbreaking conclusion for Gu's family and friends, who had clung to hope he would be found alive.
Report to Be Prepared for Coroner
The incident will now be subject to a coronial investigation. A report is being prepared for the coroner, which is standard procedure in such unexplained deaths. The community around Ledge Point, often frequented by fishers and recreational snorkellers, has been left shaken by the tragic event.
The case serves as a sombre reminder of the potential dangers associated with water activities, even in popular and seemingly calm locations. Authorities often emphasise the importance of water safety, including never swimming alone and being aware of changing conditions.
