Premier Urges Support for Red Shield Appeal
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has called on the community to dig deep for the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal, emphasising its critical role in assisting families doing it tough amid the escalating cost of living crisis. The annual fundraiser, which runs throughout May, aims to raise millions of dollars to support vulnerable Australians.
Speaking at the launch event in Sydney, Minns highlighted the increasing demand for emergency relief services as household budgets come under strain from rising interest rates, inflation, and housing costs. He noted that many families are forced to make difficult choices between essentials like food, electricity, and rent.
A Lifeline for Those in Need
The Red Shield Appeal provides crucial funding for the Salvos' network of services, including financial counselling, emergency accommodation, food vouchers, and mental health support. The Premier stressed that every donation, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in someone's life.
“The Salvos are often the first port of call for people who have nowhere else to turn,” Minns said. “This appeal is more important than ever, with more families reaching out for help than in recent memory.”
Record Demand for Assistance
The Salvation Army has reported a surge in requests for assistance, with many first-time clients seeking help. The organisation's Doorways services have seen a 20% increase in visits compared to the same period last year, reflecting the deepening financial stress across the community.
Major Brendan Nottle, the Salvation Army's national spokesperson, said the appeal is vital to meet the growing need. “We are seeing people who have never needed help before – working families, single parents, and even those with full-time jobs – struggling to make ends meet,” he said.
How to Get Involved
Residents can contribute by donating online, volunteering for door-knock collections, or participating in local fundraising events. The Premier encouraged businesses and community groups to organise their own initiatives to support the cause.
“If you can spare a few dollars or a few hours, please consider giving to the Red Shield Appeal. Your generosity will directly help families in your own neighbourhood who are facing tough times,” Minns added.
The Red Shield Appeal runs until the end of May, with collection days scheduled for the last weekend of the month. For more information or to donate, visit the Salvation Army's website.
