Newcastle support group builds community for dust disease survivors
Newcastle support group for dust disease survivors

The Asbestos Diseases Foundation of Australia Inc. (adfa) continues to provide vital support and assistance to workers, families, and communities affected by exposure to dust diseases. Following a dedicated summit organised with the assistance of Hunter Workers, the Newcastle Asbestos and Silica Dust Diseases Support Group held its inaugural meeting at Merewether in August 2024.

Transition to Toronto Workers Club

In October 2024, the group relocated its base to the Toronto Workers Club, citing better public transport links. From this new location, it now serves the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and Hunter region. Since October 2024, the group has conducted 18 support group meetings, drawing many individuals and families affected by dust-related diseases.

The Toronto Workers Club has been highly supportive, providing a welcoming venue for the group's gatherings. The group primarily assists those impacted by industrial exposure to asbestos, silica, and other dust-related diseases. Attendees have previously worked in power stations in Lake Macquarie and the Hunter, the State Dockyard at Newcastle, steelworks, the navy, private industry, and also include family members.

Leadership and Training

Mark Gill, Convenor of the group, and Katarina Draper, Co-Convenor, have completed the Cancer Council Support Group Leader Training. Their leadership helps create an environment where belonging to the support group feels like being part of a family. These meetings reduce isolation, empower individuals, and restore hope for those facing the challenges of dust diseases.

A diagnosis of an asbestos, silica, or dust-related disease can be devastating, especially for those who feel well. Individuals may experience disbelief, confusion, or fear of suffering alone. The convenors offer direction to those who are confused and overwhelmed, providing someone to talk to who understands their experiences and what lies ahead.

Social and Educational Aspects

The support group also includes a social component. Morning tea or lunch after meetings serves as an icebreaker, helping to build friendships among members. Mark Gill has arranged and continues to seek out guest speakers for the meetings. Past speakers have included SafeWork Inspectors, lawyers, doctors, and ADDRI nurses. The group hopes to secure a case worker from ICARE Dust Diseases Care to speak at a future meeting. These sessions allow members to receive information and ask questions in an informal environment.
