E. coli Contamination Triggers Urgent Recall of WA Oyster Products
E. coli Recall for WA Oyster Products

An urgent recall has been issued for a popular range of oyster products from Western Australia after they were found to be contaminated with E. coli bacteria. The affected items, produced by Harvest Road Oceans, include several varieties of Albany Rock Oysters with specific harvest dates in early February 2026.

Impacted Products and Distribution

The recall targets multiple oyster products that were available for purchase at independent food retailers across Western Australia. The specific items involved are Albany Rock Oysters Cocktail with a harvest date of February 2, 2026, Albany Rock Oysters Bottle with harvest dates of February 2 and February 4, 2026, Albany Rock Oysters Bistro harvested on February 2, 2026, and Albany Rock Oysters 10 DOZ BX also from February 2, 2026. Consumers are advised to check their purchases immediately if they have bought any of these products recently.

Health Risks and Symptoms

E. coli, a type of bacteria commonly found in the intestines of humans and animals, can vary in its effects. While some strains are harmless, others can lead to severe illness and health complications. Symptoms of an E. coli infection typically include watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, and vomiting. These signs usually appear within one to ten days after exposure to the bacteria and may persist for up to a week, requiring medical attention in serious cases.

Official Warnings and Consumer Advice

Food Standards Australia New Zealand has issued a recall alert, stating that the contaminated oyster products may cause illness. Consumers are strongly advised not to consume these items and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. FSANZ emphasises that anyone concerned about their health should seek medical advice promptly to address potential infections.

Previous Recall History

This is not the first time Harvest Road Oceans has faced such an issue. The company conducted a similar recall for rock oyster products in May of the previous year, highlighting ongoing challenges in food safety and quality control within the seafood industry. This repeated incident raises questions about the effectiveness of current monitoring and prevention measures.

The recall serves as a critical reminder for consumers to stay vigilant about food safety, especially with perishable items like oysters. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to prevent further health risks and ensure compliance with food standards.
