Major Commuter Chaos After Kwinana Freeway Collision

A serious crash involving a truck and a car has brought a key Perth transport corridor to a standstill, shutting down a major train line and causing significant traffic delays for Thursday afternoon commuters.

The collision occurred on the Kwinana Freeway near Cockburn train station shortly after 2pm on 4 December 2025. Emergency services, including St John Ambulance, rushed to the scene.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 60s, was transported to Royal Perth Hospital. Authorities have reported she is in a stable condition.

Transport Network Brought to a Halt

The impact of the crash was severe and widespread. Main Roads WA was forced to close the Kwinana Freeway southbound between Armadale Road and Beeliar Drive.

In a major blow to public transport, the Transperth Mandurah train line was cancelled between Elizabeth Quay and Aubin Grove stations. Replacement bus services were activated to ferry stranded passengers.

The disruption also caused flow-on delays to the Yanchep Line, compounding the afternoon commute for thousands of Perth residents.

Slow Recovery for Road and Rail

While the freeway was reopened to traffic just before 3pm, recovery was slow. The southbound carriageway was reduced to a single lane, causing significant residual congestion.

Main Roads WA urged motorists to exercise extreme caution in the area and consider alternative routes. Drivers were advised to potentially exit the freeway at South Street or Farrington Road to avoid the worst of the delays.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of Perth's interconnected transport networks, where a single serious incident can disrupt both road and rail for hours during peak periods.
