A man has been charged following a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a cyclist on the New South Wales Central Coast over the weekend.

Tragic Collision at Nords Wharf Intersection

Emergency services were called to the intersection of the Pacific Highway and Awabakal Drive at Nords Wharf shortly before 11am on Sunday. Reports indicated a cyclist had been struck by a vehicle.

Police will allege in court that a 42-year-old male cyclist collided with a black Toyota FJ Cruiser. The driver of the vehicle did not stop at the scene and fled following the impact.

Cyclist Succumbs to Injuries

Paramedics treated the seriously injured rider at the scene before rushing him to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical staff, the man tragically died from his injuries on Monday morning.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by cyclists on regional roads.

Police Investigation Leads to Arrest

Following extensive inquiries, detectives attended a home on Rusty Lane in Branxton. There, they located and seized a Toyota FJ Cruiser for a detailed forensic examination.

A 40-year-old man was arrested at the property and taken to Cessnock Police Station for questioning. He was subsequently charged with:

  • Dangerous driving occasioning death - drive manner dangerous
  • Negligent driving (occasioning death)

The accused was granted conditional bail and is scheduled to appear at Belmont Local Court in January to face the charges.

Investigations into the exact circumstances of the collision are continuing, and police have urged any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
