A 25-year-old man from Hoppers Crossing is set to face court after police allege he was caught driving at a life-threatening speed on a major Victorian freeway.
Staggering Speed Detected on Princes Freeway
Victoria Police Highway Patrol officers were conducting speed enforcement on the Princes Freeway at Little River, near Geelong, on the evening of Saturday, May 11. It was there, just after 6:30 PM, that a radar device allegedly clocked a vehicle travelling at an astonishing 199 kilometres per hour.
The posted speed limit on that section of the freeway is 100km/h, meaning the driver was allegedly travelling at almost double the legal limit. The incident occurred on a stretch of road used by countless families, commuters, and freight operators.
Driver Stopped and Charged
Police immediately intercepted the vehicle, a white BMW sedan. The driver, a man from Hoppers Crossing in Melbourne's west, was subjected to a preliminary breath test, which returned a negative result.
However, due to the extreme nature of the alleged speed, the 25-year-old was issued with a summons to appear before the Geelong Magistrates' Court at a later date. He has been charged on summons with the offence of dangerous driving.
Police Condemn 'Extremely Dangerous' Behaviour
A spokesperson for Victoria Police strongly condemned the driver's alleged actions, emphasising the profound risk posed to all road users.
"Driving at 199km/h on a freeway is extremely dangerous and puts not only the driver's life at risk but the lives of every other person on the road," the spokesperson stated. "At that speed, the margin for error is virtually zero. Any minor mistake or unexpected hazard could result in a catastrophic, high-speed collision with little to no chance of survival."
The police reiterated that speed remains one of the leading contributors to death and serious injury on Victorian roads. Enforcement operations are ongoing across the state to deter such reckless behaviour.
