7NEWS anchor and mother of two Angela Tsun may boast one of Western Australia's most distinguished media careers, but she insists that being a mum is her most challenging—and most rewarding—job to date.
“It’s much easier being a newsreader, let me tell you — being a mum is 24/7. There are no sick days, you don’t get paid, but it’s so rewarding,” she said. “It’s little things, like when they come and give you a hug or say, ‘I love you’, it makes it all worthwhile.”
Having recently stepped into the role of co-anchor alongside Tim McMillan from Sunday to Thursday, Ms Tsun expressed gratitude for the support system that enables her to balance a thriving career while caring for her daughters.
“I’ve got an amazing husband — I couldn’t do what I do without him,” she said. “With my increased hours, he’s picking up the slack, taking the kids to dancing and swimming lessons, picking them up from school and looking after them — and they’re thriving. I was really stressed coming into this role, thinking, ‘How are we going to manage it as a family?’ But he’s so amazing. It’s teamwork.”
While some children might find it unusual to see their mother on television four nights a week, Tsun noted that her daughters, nine-year-old Zoe and Mimi, 8, have always enjoyed being around the studio.
“They’re so used to it, I was pregnant with them and sitting behind the news desk,” she said. “Someone was kicking me in the tummy while I was reading the news. My eldest Zoe loves the news and she will not miss a six o’clock bulletin, even when I’m not reading. Mimi tends to watch just to see what I’m wearing. If I’m wearing her favourite colour yellow, she’s happy.”
With Mother’s Day falling on Sunday, Ms Tsun said she is looking forward to being spoiled with breakfast in bed. But above all, she feels deeply grateful for the privilege of being a mother.
“I’m so grateful to have beautiful and healthy children, and grateful for my mum and the women that have come before me,” she said. “I wouldn’t be who I am without them. My mum’s my best friend and I hope as my girls get older, we’ll have that same special relationship.”
