A teenage boy is recovering in hospital following a suspected shark bite incident at a popular beach in Perth's northern suburbs on New Year's Day.
Incident Details and Emergency Response
The incident occurred at Catalina Beach in Mindarie on Thursday afternoon, the 1st of January 2026. Shortly after 3pm, a friend of the injured teenager drove him directly to the emergency department of Joondalup Hospital for urgent treatment.
Hospital authorities have since reported that the young male victim is in a stable condition. The quick actions of his companion in transporting him to medical care are considered crucial in the initial response to the emergency.
No Official Shark Sightings Reported
Despite the suspected nature of the injury, official channels had recorded no alerts for shark activity in the immediate area at the time. According to the SharkSmart website, which is the primary public portal for shark activity in Western Australia, there were no reported sightings near Catalina Beach when the incident took place.
However, the scare comes just a day after a separate shark sighting was confirmed further south. On New Year's Eve, a three-metre shark was observed swimming close to shore, only about 40 metres from Port Beach in Fremantle.
