A Cairns family's festive preparations took a wild turn this week when they discovered an unexpected and slithering visitor had made a home in their Christmas tree.
Festive Decorations Turn into a Wildlife Encounter
The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 10, at the family's home in the Cairns suburb of White Rock. While retrieving decorations, a family member noticed a large, green shape coiled motionless among the artificial branches. Upon closer inspection, the shape revealed itself to be a non-venomous green tree snake, measuring over a metre in length.
The family, understandably startled, immediately contacted local snake catcher, Timothy Hudson of NQ Snake Catchers. Hudson responded promptly to the unusual call-out.
Expert Removal by Local Snake Catcher
"It's not your average find," Hudson remarked after the safe capture. He confirmed the reptile was a common green tree snake, a species frequently encountered in the tropical Far North Queensland region. Despite being harmless to humans, its sudden appearance in a household setting was certainly alarming.
Hudson expertly removed the snake from the tree. He noted that the snake was likely attracted to the cool, shaded interior of the home, seeking refuge from the hot summer weather. The artificial tree, stored in a garage or shed, probably provided a perfect, secluded spot for the reptile to settle.
The snake was released unharmed into a suitable bushland area away from residential homes.
A Reminder for Homeowners in Snake Season
This incident serves as a timely reminder for residents in tropical Australia, particularly during the warmer months when snake activity increases. Snakes can find their way into homes through small openings, often in search of shelter or prey.
Timothy Hudson offered some practical advice for homeowners:
- Check storage areas, shoes, and piles of clothing before use, especially if they have been left undisturbed.
- Seal gaps around doors, windows, and in eaves to prevent entry.
- Keep yards tidy and clear of long grass or debris piles where snakes may hide.
- If you encounter a snake, do not attempt to handle or remove it yourself. Always call a licensed professional.
While this Cairns family's story will undoubtedly become a legendary Christmas tale, it highlights the close proximity between urban life and native wildlife in Australia's north. Thanks to a quick-thinking response and expert help, their holiday season is now free of unexpected reptilian decorations.
