Hunter Water is turning to the Tomago Sandbeds to bolster water supplies as dam levels continue to decline across the region. The utility announced plans to increase extraction from the underground aquifer, which serves as a critical backup source during dry periods.
Why Tomago Sandbeds?
The Tomago Sandbeds are a major groundwater resource located north of Newcastle, capable of providing up to 40% of the region's water needs. Unlike surface dams, which are vulnerable to evaporation and reduced inflows, the sandbeds offer a more reliable supply during droughts. Hunter Water's decision comes after months of below-average rainfall, with major dams like Chichester and Grahamstown dropping to around 60% capacity.
According to Hunter Water managing director Darren Cleary, the sandbeds will be used to supplement dam water, not replace it entirely. "We are carefully managing our water resources to ensure we have enough supply for the community," he said. "The Tomago Sandbeds are a vital part of our strategy, especially as we face a drying climate."
Community Impact
Residents are urged to continue water-saving measures, as the increased extraction is a temporary measure. Hunter Water has not yet imposed mandatory restrictions but is monitoring the situation closely. The utility is also investing in water recycling and desalination projects to diversify supply sources.
- Dam levels currently at 60% capacity, down from 80% last year.
- Tomago Sandbeds can provide up to 40% of regional water demand.
- No mandatory water restrictions in place yet.
Environmental groups have raised concerns about over-extraction from the sandbeds, which could impact local ecosystems. Hunter Water assures that extraction rates will remain sustainable and within licensed limits.
The move highlights the growing pressure on water supplies in the Hunter region, which has experienced below-average rainfall for two consecutive years. Climate projections suggest more frequent and severe droughts, making groundwater and alternative sources increasingly important.
