A significant multi-agency police operation targeting coastal hotspots in the Port Stephens region over the weekend has seen hundreds of drivers tested and numerous infringements issued, as authorities ramp up efforts for the holiday period.
Wide-Reaching Operation Across Coastal Hotspots
Led by Port Stephens Hunter police, the coordinated blitz took place on Saturday, December 27, focusing on key holiday locations including Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Karuah and the expansive Myall Lakes National Park and its waterways. Police confirmed this is an annual operation run during the peak summer season, with a focus on community engagement, education and enforcing compliance.
The operation brought together a diverse range of officers and inspectors. Police resources included four-wheel-drive units patrolling beaches and trail bike officers, working alongside compliance inspectors, rangers from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, MidCoast Council officials and officers from the fisheries department.
Hundreds Tested, Multiple Offences Detected
The results of the intensive single-day operation were substantial. Officers conducted more than 630 random breath tests and six random drug tests. One of those drug tests returned a positive result for methamphetamine.
Authorities also reported over 20 community interactions, issued four cautions and handed out 11 infringement notices. These fines were for offences including failing to wear a helmet, registration breaches, and beach permit violations. Furthermore, 60 boat inspections were carried out across the local waterways.
Part of Statewide Holiday Safety Campaign
This localised blitz forms part of the broader statewide Operation Christmas and New Year 2025, which is focused on road safety and reducing crash trauma during the busy festive season. Double demerit points are in force until Saturday, January 4.
Police across the state are concentrating on the so-called 'Fatal Five' factors, with a particular emphasis on impairment, fatigue, speed and distraction, which are frequent contributors to serious collisions.
Separately, across the Port Stephens area, police have recently detected several alleged drink drivers. This includes two men, aged 22 and 33, who were both caught mid-range drink driving.
A police spokesperson reiterated the ongoing campaign, stating, "Police remind the community that Random Breath Testing (RBT) operations are being conducted in high numbers throughout the Christmas and New Year period to keep everyone safe. Expect to see police on the roads conducting alcohol and drug testing."
