Russell Brand Admits to Exploitative Sexual Conduct with Teenager
Controversial British comedian and actor Russell Brand has publicly admitted to engaging in sexual activity with a 16-year-old when he was 30 years old. This revelation came during a recent interview on The Megyn Kelly Show, where Brand emphasized that the age of consent in the United Kingdom is legally set at 16. The star of Forgetting Sarah Marshall acknowledged that his actions were exploitative, attributing them to his immature behavior at the time.
Brand Reflects on Past Behavior and Power Dynamics
During the interview, Brand, now 50, elaborated on his past, stating, "In Europe and in the United Kingdom where I am from, the age of consent is 16, and I did sleep with a 16-year-old when I was 30." He described himself as a "very different person" back then, noting his immaturity and lack of consideration. Brand further explained that many of his sexual encounters in the past were exploitative due to the significant power imbalance created by his fame.
He said, "Consensual sex, actually, with a variety of people when there is a strong power differential, is when you’re a famous man that has the ability to attract women that I had at that time, I think, involves exploitation." Brand admitted that his sexual conduct was selfish and failed to account for how it affected others, leading him to become a "hedonist and a fool, and an exploiter of women."
Legal Charges and Upcoming Trial
Russell Brand is currently facing serious legal charges, including rape and sexual assault, related to incidents alleged to have occurred between 1999 and 2005. In December of last year, two additional women came forward with accusations of rape and sexual assaults from 2009. Brand has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
He is reportedly scheduled to stand trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court on October 12. Brand has expressed a need for redemption and atonement for his past actions, stating that his fame provided him with opportunities for "endless consent" that he misused.
