Maylands Men's Crisis Accommodation to Receive $1.6 Million Revitalisation
A men's crisis accommodation complex located on Central Avenue in Maylands is set to undergo significant upgrades, with a $1.6 million refurbishment project scheduled to commence next month. This substantial investment aims to revitalise the 24-bed facility operated by community housing provider 55 Central, which has been serving the community since 2001.
Supporting Vulnerable Men in the Community
The non-profit organisation provides essential housing and support services to men who are experiencing homelessness, living with mental illness or addiction issues, or facing other challenges that impact their daily lives. The upcoming refurbishment will focus on enhancing communal areas to create a more modern and functional environment for residents.
Key improvements will include upgrades to the kitchen, lounge room, dining rooms, art rooms, bathrooms, and laundry facilities. Additionally, the surrounding grounds will receive enhancements to improve the overall living conditions and accessibility for those in need.
Government Commitment to Housing and Homelessness
Housing and Works Minister John Carey emphasised that this refurbishment will ensure 55 Central can continue providing crucial support to men at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness. "It's part of our record $6.3 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures since 2021, including significant spends to ensure existing social homes and crisis accommodation remain fit for purpose," he stated.
Homelessness Minister Matthew Swinbourn echoed this sentiment, noting that the investment is one of several initiatives aimed at upgrading and building new crisis and supported accommodation facilities across the region.
Local Advocacy and Community Impact
Maylands MLA Dan Bull highlighted the positive impact of the funding, explaining that it will enable men to receive support at the facility for longer periods due to refreshed units, improved facilities, and enhanced grounds. "55 Central does great work supporting people in our community and I'm pleased to see our government fund these important refurbishment works," he remarked.
The appointment of a builder is expected this month, with construction work projected to begin in May. This revitalisation project underscores a broader commitment to addressing homelessness and providing safe, dignified accommodation for vulnerable individuals in the Perth metropolitan area.
