Cairns residents and visitors can once again enjoy the full splendour of a revitalised Fogarty Park, with the iconic waterfront space officially reopened following a significant $4.5 million transformation.
A Major Investment in Public Space
The extensive redevelopment of Fogarty Park, a cornerstone of the Cairns Central Business District (CBD), has been completed. The project, funded by the Cairns City Council, aimed to restore the park to its former status as a premier community hub and event space. The works addressed long-standing issues with the park's infrastructure and usability.
The $4.5 million investment has delivered a comprehensive suite of improvements. A key focus was replacing the degraded and uneven lawn, which had become a tripping hazard and was unsuitable for major events. The new, level turf provides a safe and versatile green space. Furthermore, the park's irrigation and drainage systems were completely overhauled to ensure the lawn's longevity and health.
Enhancing Accessibility and Experience
Beyond the new grass, the upgrade significantly improves accessibility and the overall visitor experience. New, wider concrete pathways now weave through the park, making it easier for people of all abilities to navigate. The installation of additional shade structures and seating areas offers more comfort for those relaxing or attending events.
The park's lighting has also been upgraded, enhancing safety and security for evening use. These combined improvements ensure Fogarty Park is not only beautiful but also functional and welcoming for daily use by families, workers, and tourists alike.
A Venue Restored for Major Events
The reopening marks a return to normalcy for Cairns' event calendar. Fogarty Park is the traditional home for some of the city's most beloved large-scale gatherings, which had to be relocated or adapted during the renovation period.
Major events like the Cairns Festival and New Year's Eve celebrations can now confidently plan their return to this central location. The upgraded infrastructure, particularly the level event lawn, provides a far superior foundation for staging concerts, festivals, and community gatherings, solidifying the park's role in the city's cultural and social life.
Cairns Mayor, Cr. Amy Eden, emphasised the park's importance, stating the council is "thrilled to finally reopen this much-loved community asset." She highlighted that the works have future-proofed the park, ensuring it can continue to host events and serve as a daily retreat for decades to come. The project also involved consultation with the local Yirrganydji people, acknowledging the area's cultural significance.
The transformation of Fogarty Park represents a substantial commitment to enhancing Cairns' public realm. By addressing critical infrastructure needs and improving amenities, the council has successfully restored a vital piece of the city's heart, ensuring it remains a vibrant and accessible space for all to enjoy.
