The search for a missing man on the NSW Mid North Coast has ended in tragedy after a body was discovered in a forest on Monday afternoon.
Discovery in National Park
Police confirmed the grim find was made around 4pm during a widespread search of an area understood to be Bago Bluff National Park, near Wauchope. The location is approximately 25 minutes south of Brombin, from where the man was reported missing on Sunday.
The deceased, believed to be the 48-year-old Brombin man, was located near a bogged four-wheel drive vehicle. NSW Police have stated that investigations are ongoing and a post-mortem examination will be conducted in the coming days to formally confirm the man's identity and establish the cause of death.
Challenging Terrain and Conditions
The search focused on the 40-square-kilometre Bago Bluff National Park, a popular destination for camping, fishing, birdwatching and visiting Aboriginal sites. The park features an extensive network of tracks used by 4WDs, walkers and horse riders.
While the precise location of the discovery has not been released, authorities have highlighted challenging conditions in the area. The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) website currently maintains an alert warning visitors of weather-impacted roads, noting several have "sustained significant erosion damage due to severe weather events earlier in 2025."
"NPWS crews and contractors are currently undertaking repairs to affected roads and trails," the alert states.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are now working to piece together the final movements of the man. The discovery brings a sad conclusion to the search that began after he was reported missing from the hinterland region of Brombin.
Police have not indicated whether the death is being treated as suspicious. The community awaits further details following the completion of the post-mortem examination.
