The heartbroken parents of a young Canadian backpacker, whose body was discovered on a renowned tourist island, have landed in Australia with the solemn mission of bringing their daughter home.
A Tragic Discovery on K'gari
Piper James, a vibrant 19-year-old from Canada, was found deceased near the surf at the SS Maheno Wreck on K'gari, Queensland, in the early hours of January 19. Her lifeless body was surrounded by dingoes, just an hour after she was believed to have gone for a swim.
Her parents, Todd and Angela James, arrived in Brisbane on Tuesday morning via an Air Canada flight, accompanied by Piper's best friend, Taylor, and other close family members.
Journey to Rainbow Beach
From Brisbane, the family travelled to Rainbow Beach, which serves as the gateway to K'gari. Piper had been working there as a tour guide while exploring Australia since October, embracing the adventure of her backpacking journey.
A Ceremony to Honour Piper's Memory
The family is scheduled to attend a smoking ceremony with local Aboriginal elders on Wednesday morning at the shipwreck site, where Piper's body was found. This traditional ritual aims to provide spiritual cleansing and pay respects.
Todd James expressed his emotions on social media, writing, "To walk where she walked and try to feel her spirit. It is now time to be where Piper last was and be with her in some way."
Ongoing Investigation into the Death
Authorities are continuing their investigation into Piper's death, as the initial autopsy results proved inconclusive. The findings indicated physical evidence consistent with drowning, along with dingo bites, but the exact cause remains under scrutiny.
Final Arrangements and Farewell
Piper's family plans to have her cremated in Brisbane before her remains are returned to British Columbia, Canada. A celebration of her life is set for February 28, where loved ones will gather to honour her memory.
