Gosnells Charity Launches Innovative Tech Program to Support Neurodivergent Youth
Sam's Spares, a charity based in Gosnells, has introduced a groundbreaking initiative called the 'get one, give one' (G1G1) program. This initiative is designed to tackle digital inequalities by offering refurbished IT devices to those in need while simultaneously creating employment opportunities for neurodivergent individuals.
Addressing Digital Disparities Through Sustainable Solutions
The G1G1 program specifically targets gaps in access, affordability, and skills related to modern technology. For every IT device purchased from Sam's Spares, the charity provides a free, refurbished device to someone facing digital disadvantages. This approach not only helps bridge the digital divide but also promotes environmental sustainability by reducing electronic waste.
Chief executive officer Diane Lloyd emphasized that the program is about more than just technology; it's about creating meaningful opportunities. "This is about more than just technology, it's about opportunity," she said. "Every purchase directly creates employment and puts a device into the hands of someone who otherwise would go without."
Empowering Neurodivergent Individuals in the Tech Industry
The program is also focused on building job pathways for neurodivergent youth, training them in IT repair, refurbishment, and data destruction. Sam Thomas, the founder of Sam's Spares who is autistic, highlighted how G1G1 challenges outdated perceptions that exclude neurodivergent people from tech careers.
"We're proving that with the right support and environment, neurodivergent people can build real careers in tech. This program gives us the ability to grow those opportunities," Thomas explained.
Community Support and Environmental Impact
Local businesses, schools, and community members are encouraged to support the G1G1 initiative by purchasing devices online from Sam's Spares. Since its founding in 2022, the charity has distributed over 4000 free devices across Western Australia, providing technology valued at more than $1.8 million to struggling communities. Additionally, Sam's Spares has diverted over 600 tonnes of e-waste from landfill, underscoring its commitment to both social and environmental causes.
This program represents a holistic approach to addressing digital inequality, combining job creation, community support, and waste reduction to foster a more inclusive and sustainable future.
