Firefighters Battle Through the Night to Contain Tomago Bushfire
Firefighters have worked tirelessly overnight to control a bushfire that ignited at Tomago on Wednesday morning, with crews from the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) undertaking strategic operations to strengthen containment lines.
The blaze has burned through approximately 41 hectares of pine forest located just off Masonite Road, about four kilometres south of Raymond Terrace in the Hunter region. As of Thursday morning, the fire is being managed and remains at an advice level, indicating no immediate threat to nearby properties.
Overnight Firefighting Efforts
Throughout the night, RFS crews conducted tactical burns and utilized heavy plant equipment to reinforce fire containment lines. This proactive approach aims to prevent the fire from spreading further and protect the surrounding community.
On Wednesday, around 30 firefighters and 11 trucks were deployed to tackle the blaze, which had initially burned through roughly 26 hectares. The firefighting efforts have since expanded to cover the increased area affected.
Community Impact and Safety Advice
Residents in the area may notice smoke lingering on Thursday, including along the Pacific Highway, as crews continue to monitor and manage the fire scene. The public is urged to remain vigilant and only call Triple Zero (000) if they spot an unattended fire, not merely due to visible smoke.
For ongoing updates and safety information, authorities recommend checking the Hazards Near Me app and the RFS website. The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time, with investigations likely to follow once the situation is fully under control.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by emergency services during bushfire season, particularly in regions like Tomago near Newcastle, where dry conditions and forested areas can pose significant risks.
