Canberra's New Embassy CBR: A Diplomatic Dance Floor Debuts in Sydney Building
New Embassy CBR opens as dual-concept bar and nightclub

Canberra has welcomed a new kind of diplomatic mission, one where the negotiations happen on the dance floor and the passports are cocktail menus. The Embassy CBR officially opened its doors last month, bringing an international flavour to the capital's evening and late-night scene.

A Dual-Concept Venue for a Divided Night

Located in the historic Sydney Building, The Embassy CBR is a venue of two distinct personalities. As evening falls, it presents itself as a sophisticated, cosmopolitan cocktail bar, catering to a professional crowd looking for after-work drinks. Then, at 9pm, the venue undergoes a transformation, shifting gears into an energetic nightclub aimed at a younger demographic.

Co-owner Anu, who has previous experience as a DJ in other Canberra venues, explained the strategy. "We knew we'd be competing with places like Luna nearby," he said. The idea was to first attract office workers before the nightlife crowd heads to established spots like Mooseheads. "There's not a lot on offer for people in that middle range," Anu noted, emphasising they didn't want to be just another cocktail bar.

A Passport to Global Flavours and Beats

The name 'Embassy' is a fitting tribute to Canberra's diplomatic heart, but the owners intend it to be a literal gateway to the world. The drink menu is a journey in itself, featuring globally inspired ingredients like Japanese yuzu, Caribbean rum, and spicy mezcal.

The international theme is set to expand with planned 'international nights'. On these evenings, the focus will shift to a specific country, influencing both the speciality drinks on offer and the music played by the DJ. While the standard soundtrack leans towards R&B and top 40 hits, these dedicated nights will feature music from the chosen nation.

"Some of the feedback we've got is that people come for the atmosphere, the music, the vibe," Anu shared, highlighting the importance of the overall experience.

Opening Amidst Infrastructure Challenges

The new venue has taken over the space once occupied by half of the former Reload Bar. Anu admitted that opening at this time, with major light rail construction happening directly outside, is far from ideal. Conversations with other local business owners revealed a dramatic drop in foot traffic, with some reporting patronage declines of up to 50 percent.

"It is a bit nerve-wracking, especially paying staff and the rent," Anu confessed. To counter the disruption, the team plans to make the most of their rear outdoor area.

Despite the hurdles, the owners see this as a moment of opportunity. They view The Embassy CBR as part of the next chapter for Canberra's night-time economy. "We're a chance to show that with the right vision, commitment and passion, great music, good drinks and community can thrive again," Anu stated.

The Embassy CBR is the second new venture to move into the former Reload Bar spot, following the recent opening of Bloom Room CBR last month.
