Comedian and actress Amy Schumer has publicly clarified the real reason behind her significant body transformation, stating her recent weight loss was a matter of survival, not aesthetics.
The Real Reason Behind the Transformation
On Tuesday, the 44-year-old Trainwreck star took to her Instagram story to directly address the ongoing speculation about her appearance and personal life. Schumer corrected the record on the extent of her weight loss, revealing she shed 50 pounds (approximately 22.7 kilograms), not the 30 pounds often reported.
"Not to look hot, which does feel fun and temporary. I did it to survive," Schumer wrote candidly. She explained she had been diagnosed with Cushing Syndrome, a serious condition where the body produces an excess of the stress hormone cortisol, leading to symptoms like significant weight gain and high blood pressure.
"I had a disease that makes your face extremely puffy and can kill you but the internet caught it and that disease has cleared," she shared, thanking online commentators who had previously speculated about her health.
Health Journey and Addressing Rumours
In her detailed post, Schumer was transparent about the methods she used to manage her health. She confirmed she had taken the weight-loss medication Mounjaro, after a previous attempt with Wegovy in 2022 resulted in a "horrible experience" with nausea. Mounjaro, originally developed for type 2 diabetes, provided a "really good experience" for her.
The comedian also addressed swirling rumours about the state of her marriage to husband Chris Fischer, which intensified after she was seen multiple times without her wedding ring. Schumer firmly stated that any marital issues were unrelated to her physical changes or her husband's autism diagnosis.
"Whatever ends up happening with me and Chris, has nothing to do with weight loss or autism," she asserted. "Fingers crossed we make it through, he’s the best."
Clearing the Air on Social Media Moves
Schumer also felt the need to explain her recent decision to delete all posts from her Instagram account prior to her weight loss. She denied that the move was an attempt to erase her past image, pushing back against a narrative she says was created by others.
"I didn’t delete my old photos because they were pre me losing weight," she clarified. "That’s a narrative you created. I’m proud of how I’ve looked always. I have been working to be pain free and I finally am."
Schumer has been open about her health and body image for years, having previously revealed she underwent liposuction in 2022 following the birth of her son, Gene, who is now six. Her latest revelations underscore a difficult health battle fought largely in the public eye.
