Australian actor and comedian Shane Jacobson has made an unusual real estate move, purchasing the iconic Dederang Pub in Victoria's Alpine Shire without ever setting foot inside the establishment. The pub, located in the small town of Dederang, about 350 kilometres northeast of Melbourne, was bought sight unseen by the Kenny star.
A Leap of Faith
Jacobson, known for his roles in Australian film and television, admitted the purchase was a leap of faith. He told the Border Mail that he had seen photos and videos of the pub but decided to buy it based on its potential and the community's spirit. The actor, who grew up in regional Victoria, said he wanted to give back to a town that reminded him of his childhood.
Plans for the Pub
Jacobson plans to undertake significant renovations to restore the pub to its former glory. He envisions it as a hub for locals and tourists alike, offering classic pub fare, live entertainment, and a welcoming atmosphere. The actor has already hired a local manager to oversee daily operations while he focuses on the renovation project.
“I wanted to invest in a place that has heart, and Dederang has that in spades,” Jacobson said. “The pub is the heart of any small town, and I want to make sure it thrives for generations to come.”
Community Reaction
Local residents have expressed excitement and curiosity about the new owner. Many are hopeful that Jacobson's involvement will bring renewed attention and business to the area. Dederang, with a population of just over 200, relies heavily on tourism and agriculture.
“It’s fantastic to have someone like Shane take an interest in our town,” said a local business owner. “We can’t wait to see what he does with the place.”
Jacobson's Connection to Regional Victoria
Jacobson has often spoken fondly of his upbringing in regional Victoria. He grew up in the small town of Myrtleford, not far from Dederang, and has maintained strong ties to the area. The actor believes that supporting regional communities is vital, especially after the challenges of recent years, including bushfires and the pandemic.
“Regional towns have been through so much,” Jacobson said. “If I can help bring some life back to a place like Dederang, it’s a small way of saying thank you for the great childhood I had.”
Renovation Details
While specific renovation plans are still being finalised, Jacobson has indicated that the pub will retain its historic charm while being updated for modern comfort. The menu will feature locally sourced ingredients, and the pub will host regular events such as live music and trivia nights.
“We want to keep the soul of the pub alive,” he explained. “It’s about creating a space where everyone feels welcome, whether they’re a local or just passing through.”
The purchase of the Dederang Pub is the latest in a series of celebrity investments in Australian regional pubs. In recent years, other well-known figures have bought or invested in country pubs, drawn by their unique character and community importance.
Jacobson’s decision to buy without a visit has raised eyebrows, but he remains confident. “Sometimes you just know when something feels right,” he said. “This pub has good bones and a great location. It’s going to be a lot of work, but I’m excited to be part of the Dederang community.”
The pub is expected to reopen under its new ownership in the coming months, with renovations beginning shortly.
