NZ Farm Stay Named One of World's Greatest Places of 2026
NZ Luxury Farm Stay Named Top Global Destination 2026

A luxury farm stay nestled in New Zealand’s Southern Alps has been recognised as one of the world’s greatest places of 2026. Combining opulent accommodation with authentic farm life across thousands of hectares of stunning countryside, the sprawling working sheep station is situated just 90 minutes from Christchurch.

As part of a trip organised by Tourism New Zealand, The Morning Show host Kylie Gillies visited Flockhill Estate to explore everything it has to offer.

Luxury Meets Farm Life

Named by TIME as one of the World’s Greatest Places of 2026, the estate seamlessly integrates luxury villas, fine dining, and outdoor adventure with the everyday operations of a working farm.

“If you’re looking for the best of both worlds, luxury accommodation nestled on a working farm, Flockhill Station fits the bill,” Gillies said. “Fine dining, outdoor activities, and maybe even a snow-capped mountain or two. If this is farm life, sign me up!”

A Fully Operational Station

Farm manager Richie explained that the property remains a fully operational station alongside its luxury tourism offering. “It’s a viable working station. We run around 10,000 sheep and about 5,000 stock units in cattle as well,” he said. “Our sheep are a dual-purpose breed, producing both good wool and good meat.”

Gillies also met the station’s sheep dogs, with Richie joking that they are responsible for most of the work. “These sheep would not be standing here if it wasn’t for the dogs doing their job,” he added.

Sustainable Dining from Garden to Table

The estate’s philosophy extends into the kitchen, where chef Taylor Cullen works closely with the on-site gardens to create seasonal menus using produce grown just metres from the restaurant. “We have the goal to be completely self-sufficient apart from seafood because there’s no ocean here,” Cullen said. “And that starts with the farm we’re on. As a chef, seeing someone as passionate about growing food as you are about cooking it — there’s nothing better.”

The extensive gardens grow everything from wombok cabbage and cauliflower to tomatoes and basil, all within a greenhouse designed to keep producing food through snowy winters. Guests are encouraged to tour the gardens, harvest produce, and learn about sustainable farming practices before dining at Sugarloaf restaurant, where ingredients are picked fresh that same day.

Adventure and Scenery

The property also offers helicopter rides, luxury accommodation, and sweeping views of the Southern Alps, showcasing the best of New Zealand’s South Island in one unforgettable destination.
