Brisbane Heat Keen to Play BBL Opener in Chennai, India

Brisbane Heat have expressed interest in being one of the first teams to play a Big Bash League (BBL) game overseas, potentially opening the 2026-27 season in Chennai, India. Cricket Australia (CA) has reportedly received positive news in the past 24 hours regarding the initiative, which aims to boost the league's profile in the Indian market.

The challenge now is to determine which two teams will participate. Brisbane Heat chief executive Terry Svenson confirmed the club's support for the proposal, stating, 'We’ve had the opportunity to discuss this with CA and are supportive of the initiative.' He added that the Heat have a strong international following through social media.

CA initially proposed exploring an overseas fixture for the BBL opener, identifying Chennai as the preferred location. According to Indian media, the Chennai governing body has approved the concept in principle, pending final sign-off from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Several BBL franchises have indicated a preference to be the away team in Chennai rather than forfeit a home game. Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades are also interested, with Cricket Victoria chief executive Nick Cummins stating, 'We would love to be a part of that, and we would be happy to be the home team.'

Sydney Thunder has existing ties to Chennai through Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who signed with the club last year but was ruled out due to injury. The club is hopeful of signing him again. However, the involvement of Pakistani players in the BBL could pose logistical challenges, as history shows obtaining visas for them to enter India can be difficult.

The overseas player draft for the upcoming BBL season is scheduled for later this year, which will determine the availability of international players for the proposed fixture.
