Brisbane Heat have put forward their interest in becoming one of the first teams to play a Big Bash League (BBL) match overseas, with plans to open the upcoming summer tournament in India.
Cricket Australia's Push for India
Cricket Australia is reportedly optimistic after receiving encouraging news within the last 24 hours regarding their efforts to launch the 2026-27 season in India. The initiative aims to boost the league's profile in the Indian market, especially as discussions around the privatisation of BBL teams remain ongoing.
Two Teams to Travel
The challenge now lies in determining which two teams will participate, as only two sides can be involved in the overseas fixtures. Brisbane Heat CEO Terry Svenson confirmed that the Chennai move is a positive step supported by Queensland Cricket.
"We've had the opportunity to discuss this with CA and are supportive of the initiative," Svenson told AAP. "The Brisbane Heat have been one of the competition's best performing teams off the field with a strong international following through social media, so we look forward to further discussions with CA."
Chennai as Preferred Location
According to sources, Cricket Australia initially proposed exploring the possibility of taking the first BBL game overseas this summer, identifying India and specifically Chennai as the preferred destination. In the past 24 hours, the Chennai governing body has reportedly approved the plan in principle, pending final sign-off from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Franchise Preferences
Several BBL franchises have indicated they would prefer to be the away team in Chennai rather than sacrificing a home game. The Heat are among those hoping to retain their five allotted home games at the Gabba while participating in the overseas fixture.
BCCI approval will be crucial for the plan to proceed. The Sydney Thunder, a club with strong links to Chennai through off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, is another potential participant. Ashwin initially signed with the Thunder last year as the first Indian player in the BBL but was ruled out due to injury. The club is hopeful of securing his services again this season.
Challenges with Pakistani Players
However, there are complications involving Pakistani players who feature in the BBL. Historical tensions between India and Pakistan have made it difficult for Pakistani cricketers to enter India. Most BBL teams have had Pakistani players on their rosters, with the overseas player draft scheduled for later this year.
The move to India represents a significant step for the BBL, potentially opening new revenue streams and expanding the league's global footprint. If successful, it could pave the way for more international fixtures in the future.
