Perth's Iconic Stadium Proposes Sweeping Changes to Alcohol Service and Event Management
In a bold move to modernise operations, the management of Perth's historic Rectangular Stadium has lodged a formal application with the State government seeking significant alterations to its liquor licence. The proposed changes aim to align the venue more closely with contemporary standards and enhance the overall experience for patrons attending major sporting and entertainment events.
Key Proposals for Enhanced Beverage Service and Extended Hours
The application, submitted by VenuesLive, outlines several key modifications designed to update the 116-year-old facility. One of the most notable proposals is the elimination of the current 3.5 per cent alcohol cap in public bars. This change would permit the sale of full-strength beers, including popular brands like Gage Road, alongside a broader selection of alcoholic beverages. This adjustment mirrors recent approvals granted to Optus Stadium, reflecting a trend toward more flexible serving options at major venues.
Additionally, the plan includes relaxing restrictions on certain drink combinations, such as spirits mixed with energy drinks, for specific events. Corporate hospitality areas would also benefit from revised rules allowing pre-stocked eskies, while function room patrons could purchase up to four standard drinks at once, doubling the current limit of two.
Operational Flexibility and Improved Patron Experience
Beyond beverage service, the application seeks to enhance operational flexibility by removing limits on temporary bars entirely. This change would grant event organisers greater freedom to scale service based on the size and nature of each event, potentially improving efficiency and customer satisfaction.
To address post-event congestion, the proposal includes extending the time allowed for patrons to exit the stadium from 30 minutes to 60 minutes after an event concludes. For concert nights, a standard 1am closing time is suggested, replacing the current rule of 90 minutes after a show ends. Importantly, this does not extend the existing liquor trading hours but aims to provide a more consistent schedule.
Family-Friendly Initiatives and Broader Community Engagement
The application also emphasises a shift toward fostering a more inclusive and family-friendly atmosphere. Restrictions preventing juveniles from entering The Shed during soccer matches would be lifted, and rules around unaccompanied minors at combat sports events would be relaxed. According to the submission, these changes are intended to support community participation and encourage family attendance at sporting events.
This modernisation effort follows a substantial $32 million upgrade completed in 2023 in preparation for the FIFA Women's World Cup. The venue has since hosted high-profile events, including the Matildas' Olympic Qualifiers and concerts by artists like Harry Styles and Foo Fighters. The proposed licence adjustments are seen as a natural progression to maintain the stadium's relevance and appeal in a competitive entertainment landscape.
The application is currently open for public submissions until March 31, allowing stakeholders and community members to provide feedback on the proposed changes. If approved, these modifications could significantly reshape the patron experience at one of Perth's most iconic venues, paving the way for enhanced events and broader community engagement in the years to come.
