After sitting empty for close to half a decade, a prominent spot at The Rise in Maylands has finally found a new tenant, injecting fresh life into the community hub.
A Long-Awaited Activation
The City of Bayswater has officially welcomed Grind @ The Rise to the precinct, marking the end of a nearly five-year vacancy for the prime cafe space. The new establishment aims to become a go-to spot for coffee and casual catch-ups, while also playing a key role in activating the surrounding area.
The cafe's menu focuses on healthy options, featuring items like smoothie bowls, wraps, baked goods, and fresh juices. A commitment to local sourcing is a cornerstone of their offering.
Selection and Community Impact
The Rockingham-based operator was selected by Bayswater councillors during a council meeting in July 2025. They were chosen over two other applicants: Maylands’ Grow & Grind and Bayswater’s JBD Pty Ltd.
Beyond serving food and drink, the venture is expected to provide valuable employment opportunities for local residents. Plans are in place to offer barista training specifically for young people, fostering skills within the community.
Mayor's Vision for the Precinct
City of Bayswater Mayor Filomena Piffaretti expressed her enthusiasm for the opening. She noted that the cafe joins several not-for-profit groups already leasing space at The Rise.
"In occupying this space with a cafe, the city is meeting a growing demand to activate this important, well used and community-facing part of Maylands," Mayor Piffaretti said.
She highlighted the business's connection to Ambrosia Catering, a well-known state-wide catering company, as a sign of the city's appeal to high-calibre operators.
"Whether you’ve participated in a group fitness class at the health club, studied at the Maylands Library, dropped your kid off at the creche, or even hired a court for a round of pickleball, there’s now the option to have a coffee afterwards or just take a break," she added.
Accessibility and Ongoing Challenges
The cafe has been designed to be inclusive, with wheelchair access, pram-friendly facilities, and menu options that cater to various dietary requirements.
The positive news of the opening comes as some local residents continue to voice concerns about antisocial behaviour in the area. In response, Deputy Mayor Elli Petersen-Pik indicated on social media that the city is exploring further measures to address the issue. One potential solution under consideration is temporarily locking public toilets to help manage the problem.
The opening of Grind @ The Rise on 4 December 2025 represents a significant step in fulfilling the potential of The Rise as a vibrant, multi-use community destination for Maylands.
