Melbourne Father Shaken After Terrifying Botched Carjacking Outside Daughter's School
A Melbourne father has been left deeply shaken after a terrifying botched carjacking attempt outside his daughter's elite school in the suburb of Kew on Tuesday afternoon. The 48-year-old man was waiting to pick up his daughter from the prestigious Kew school around 3:30 pm when he was suddenly approached by two men who allegedly threatened him with a knife.
Failed Carjacking and Dramatic Police Chase
The two alleged offenders jumped into the father's Mercedes vehicle, but incredibly, they were unable to start the car, forcing them to abandon their initial plan. The pair then fled the scene, running just 200 metres to the next street. This sparked a major police operation in the normally quiet and peaceful suburb, as officers launched an intensive search for the suspects.
The alleged offenders hid in residents' bushes and backyards for several hours, creating a tense atmosphere in the neighbourhood. Local residents reported dramatic scenes as police combed the area, with one witness describing hearing yelling and the sound of people moving on roofs. The two men eventually emerged around 8:50 pm, more than four hours after the initial incident.
Arrest and Community Reaction
Both men were captured on camera walking to the end of the street where police had established a presence. When they realized officers were waiting, the pair attempted to run back down the street with police in pursuit. They were eventually arrested as they allegedly tried to flee through residential backyards, bringing the tense situation to a close.
Local residents expressed both fear and frustration about the incident, with one community member stating that the government needs to take action to ensure safety in their own neighbourhoods. Another resident described how frightening the experience was, especially considering it happened along a route they regularly walk home.
Charges and Aftermath
The two men, aged 40 and 33, have now both been charged with carjacking among other related offences. While the father was understandably shaken by the traumatic experience, he fortunately did not sustain any physical injuries during the incident. The botched carjacking has raised concerns about safety in what is typically considered a secure and affluent Melbourne suburb.
The elite Kew school where the incident occurred is known for its prestigious reputation, making the violent attempt particularly shocking to the local community. Police have confirmed they are continuing their investigation into the matter while residents remain vigilant about security in their neighbourhood.
