Police are hunting for a man after a frightening alleged carjacking attempt in Newcastle, where a driver was threatened with a meat cleaver while sitting in his vehicle at traffic lights.
CCTV Released in Hunt for Suspect
Investigators have taken the unusual step of releasing closed-circuit television footage as they appeal for public help to identify a person they believe can assist their inquiries. The incident occurred on Wednesday, December 10, at about 7:00pm.
According to police statements, a 20-year-old driver had stopped at the lights on Railway Street in Newcastle when an unknown man opened the car door and got inside the vehicle.
Details of the Terrifying Ordeal
The intruder then allegedly produced a meat cleaver and threatened the young driver. After the confrontation, the man got out of the car and fled the scene on foot. Fortunately, the driver was not physically injured during the ordeal and was able to immediately contact emergency services.
Newcastle City Police have described the man they wish to speak to as being in his 20s with a fair complexion. He was last seen wearing specific clothing which may help members of the public recognise him.
Police Appeal for Information
The person of interest was captured on CCTV wearing a black t-shirt, grey shorts, and white shoes. He was also sporting a black cap and carrying a small backpack at the time of the incident.
Authorities are urging anyone who recognises the man or has any information about his whereabouts to come forward immediately. They have provided multiple channels for the public to share information confidentially.
