Construction Underway for New Affordable and Social Housing in Murdoch
Ground-breaking construction has officially commenced on a significant affordable and social housing development within the Murdoch health and knowledge precinct in Perth. This project marks a pivotal step in addressing housing concerns in the region.
Project Details and Location
The development will consist of a 213-unit apartment complex, strategically located to serve Perth's inner south. Of these units, 65 will be designated as social housing dwellings, while 148 will be offered as affordable rentals. The site is situated near key amenities, including Murdoch University, Fiona Stanley Hospital, and the Bull Creek shopping centre, with excellent access to public transport options.
Government Announcement and Funding
Western Australian Premier Roger Cook and Housing and Works Minister John Carey announced the project, named Rise at Murdoch, during a public event at Murdoch Square. Premier Cook emphasized the development's role in boosting housing supply. "This 213-unit apartment project will significantly enhance the availability of affordable and social housing close to Murdoch University and Fiona Stanley Hospital," he stated. "It aims to reduce local public housing waitlist demand and provide more affordable options for essential workers."
The project is funded through a combined effort of State and Federal governments. The Cook Government has contributed a $46.2 million grant, supplemented by nearly $165 million from the Federal Government, ensuring robust financial support for this landmark initiative.
Broader Housing Strategy and Community Impact
Minister Carey highlighted that this development is part of a larger, ambitious program to deliver affordable build-to-rent projects across Perth. "We are committed to collaborating with the Federal Government and the community housing sector to increase the supply of social housing and rentals for low-income workers," he explained. "Western Australia faces significant housing and rental pressures, prompting unprecedented state intervention to create more social and affordable rental options."
Tangney MP Sam Lim praised the project for its strategic location within the Murdoch health and knowledge precinct, an area undergoing urban renewal by Development WA. "Residents will benefit from having Fiona Stanley Hospital, Murdoch University, and excellent public transport practically on their doorstep," he said. "This initiative focuses on building communities, not just housing, ensuring access to essential services and opportunities for thriving."
Partnership and Future Outlook
The construction is being managed through a partnership between community housing provider Foundation Housing Ltd and WA development company H-U. This collaboration underscores a concerted effort to tackle housing challenges in Western Australia, with the Murdoch development serving as a model for future projects aimed at enhancing affordable living options in key urban areas.
