Ardea's WA Nickel Project Gains International Recognition in Japan-US Critical Minerals Fact Sheet
Ardea Resources' Kalgoorlie nickel project in Western Australia has received significant international attention, being featured in the Japan-US Critical Minerals Joint Fact Sheet. This document is a collaborative effort between the two nations to strengthen critical mineral supply chains for Western markets.
Project Details and Global Significance
The project, known as the KNP-Goongarrie Hub, is located approximately 70 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. It boasts an impressive resource of 854 million tonnes, grading 0.71 per cent nickel and 0.045 per cent cobalt. This translates to a massive 6.1 million tonnes of contained nickel and 386,000 tonnes of cobalt.
Management at Ardea Resources believes the project holds global importance, a view now reinforced by its inclusion in the Joint Fact Sheet. This recognition could enhance the supply of critical minerals to Western nations, supporting economic and strategic interests.
International Collaboration and Agreements
The spotlight on this project follows a recent summit between US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, where leaders agreed to deepen cooperation on critical minerals. The fact sheet was released by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
Ardea's managing director, Andrew Penkethman, expressed satisfaction with the acknowledgment and welcomed the project's inclusion. He emphasized the company's commitment to ongoing collaboration among Australia, Japan, and the US to advance the Goongarrie Hub towards development and secure supply chains.
In 2024, Ardea solidified international ties by entering a binding agreement with a Japanese consortium comprising Sumitomo Metal Mining and Mitsubishi Corporation. Under this deal, the consortium will fully fund a definitive feasibility study (DFS) with a budget of $98.5 million. Upon completion, the investors will acquire a 35 per cent stake in the project, with an option to increase to 50 per cent if a positive final investment decision is made for a nickel operation exceeding 30,000 tonnes per annum.
Project Progress and Financial Support
The DFS is on track for completion in the first half of this year, with several design modifications from the preliminary feasibility study released in July 2023. Key changes include replacing an atmospheric leach circuit with an expanded high-pressure-acid-leach (HPAL) circuit and shifting to selling nickel as a mixed sulphide precipitate (MSP), which offers improved payability and suitability for global smelters and refineries.
Financially, Ardea has secured non-binding, conditional letters of support from prominent groups such as Export Finance Australia (EFA) and the Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM). Combined support could reach up to A$1 billion, with EFA potentially providing $500 million and EXIM offering a letter of interest for US$350 million (approximately A$500 million).
Overall, the KNP-Goongarrie Hub stands as a major project poised to play a crucial role in supplying critical minerals essential for Western industries and national security.
