A significant tyre fire at a property south of Perth has prompted a hazardous materials (HAZMAT) alert on Tuesday afternoon, with emergency services reporting dangerous plumes of toxic smoke in the area.
HAZMAT Warning Issued
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) issued a HAZMAT general warning for the region bounded by Rapids Road, Utley Road, Polo Road, and the area north of Wattle Road in Serpentine at 2:13 PM. The blaze itself is located at the intersection of Wattle Road and Rapids Road, in close proximity to the Serpentine townsite.
According to the warning, a HAZMAT fire involving tyres at a property is generating substantial plumes of smoke. DFES has advised motorists to avoid the area if possible and, for those already in the vicinity, to reduce speed and drive with extreme caution.
