Perth Man Receives Jail Term After Airport Cash and Drug Discovery

A West Australian man has been sentenced to four months in prison following an incident at Perth Airport where authorities discovered a significant sum of cash and illicit substances in his luggage.

Details of the Airport Incident

Cransten Charles Caville, aged 40, was apprehended by the Australian Federal Police after airport staff reported suspicious behaviour during his check-in process on the morning of August 12. The man was preparing to travel to Sydney via Melbourne when his activities raised concerns among airline personnel.

Upon investigation, police officers located $33,000 in cash within Caville's luggage. The substantial amount of money was suspected to be connected to criminal enterprises. Additionally, authorities found a small quantity of methamphetamine alongside the cash during their search.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

Caville appeared before the Perth Magistrates Court on January 16, where he pleaded guilty to two separate charges. These included one count of possessing money reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime and one count of methamphetamine possession.

The court handed down a one-month jail sentence for the drug offence and a three-month term for the cash-related charge. According to the Australian Federal Police, these sentences were ordered to be served cumulatively, resulting in a total effective sentence of four months imprisonment.

Police Commentary on Airport Security

AFP Detective acting Inspector Fleur Jennings emphasised the importance of vigilance in preventing criminal activities at Australian airports. "The AFP works closely with our partners to protect the community and Australia's legitimate economy, and ensure air travel is not used as part of the criminal supply chain," Det. a/Insp. Jennings stated.

She highlighted the crucial role played by observant airline staff in this particular case, noting that their prompt reporting enabled authorities to intervene before the scheduled flight departure. "Anyone detected travelling with large amounts of unexplained cash will be investigated to determine whether the source of those funds is lawful," she added.

Broader Context of Airport Seizures

The Australian Federal Police revealed that more than $3.2 million in suspected proceeds of crime were seized at Perth Airport alone during the previous year. Authorities have laid charges in connection with multiple significant seizures at the facility.

Other notable incidents from the same period include:

  • A New South Wales man charged after allegedly being found with $1.1 million in cash within a suitcase in February
  • A Pakistani national charged with possessing approximately $100,000 in June
  • A New South Wales woman allegedly discovered with $312,000 in her luggage during December

These cases demonstrate the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to intercept illicit financial movements through Australian airports and maintain the integrity of the nation's transportation systems.
