Man charged after allegedly breaching Perth Airport tarmac
Man charged over Perth Airport tarmac breach

A 25-year-old New Zealand national is set to appear in a Perth court following a major security breach at Perth Airport, where he allegedly forced his way onto the active tarmac.

Alleged Intoxicated Intrusion

Australian Federal Police (AFP) were called to the airport on Tuesday after alarmed staff reported a man within the restricted "airside" area. Authorities allege the man was intoxicated and had been denied boarding for a flight. It is further alleged he then activated a "break glass" emergency alarm.

Confrontation and Arrest on the Tarmac

The situation escalated when the man is accused of pushing past airline personnel to gain unauthorised access to the operational tarmac. He then reportedly walked towards an aircraft before being intercepted. The AFP arrested the 25-year-old and charged him with entering an airside security zone without permission. This offence carries a maximum financial penalty of $15,650.

Police Warning on Airport Security

Acting Superintendent Hayly Faithfull of the AFP emphasised the seriousness of the incident. She stated that secure areas within airports are under constant and close surveillance. "Airside restrictions exist to ensure the safety and security of the travelling public and workers," Faithfull said. "If you choose to ignore the warnings and enter an airside security zone without permission, you will potentially face prosecution."

The accused man is scheduled to face the Perth Magistrates Court on Wednesday to answer the charge.
