Air New Zealand Unveils Economy Bunk Beds for Ultra-Long-Haul Travel
Air travel is undergoing a significant transformation as Air New Zealand confirms the introduction of bunk beds for economy passengers on ultra-long-haul flights. The airline's innovative Skynest pods are set to debut on the Auckland-to-New York route, one of the world's longest commercial flights at approximately 17 hours.
Details of the Skynest Experience
For an additional fee of around $408, travellers can exchange their standard seat for a lie-flat bed during a four-hour block, providing a rare opportunity to rest comfortably in economy class. The Skynest configuration includes six pod-style beds arranged in a bunk setup between the economy and premium economy cabins, each measuring about 203 centimetres in length.
Passengers will receive comprehensive amenities, including bedding, a privacy curtain, adjustable lighting controls, ventilation systems, and charging ports. A special Nestcessities kit, featuring items like an eye mask and earplugs, will also be provided to enhance the sleep experience.
Strict Conditions and Accessibility
However, the service comes with specific restrictions to ensure safety and efficiency. Only one passenger is permitted per pod, bookings are limited to a single four-hour session per individual, and travellers must be capable of climbing into the bunks independently. Additionally, children under the age of 15 are not allowed to use the Skynest pods.
Priced at roughly $100 per hour, this offering positions itself as a middle-ground solution between the cramped conditions of economy seating and the substantially higher costs associated with business class travel.

Air New Zealand chief executive Nikhil Ravishankar emphasised that the Skynest concept is designed to make long-haul travel more manageable for passengers. For a country as remote as New Zealand, the journey matters, he stated. Skynest is designed to help make that easier. By giving more people the chance to properly rest on ultra-long-haul flights, it helps make travel to and from New Zealand more manageable.
Launch Timeline and Historical Significance
Bookings for the Skynest will open on May 18, with the first equipped flights scheduled to take off from November 2026. This launch marks a historic milestone as the first instance where economy passengers on a commercial flight will have access to flat beds for sleeping, potentially setting a new standard in the aviation industry.
