Newcastle Jets captain Cassidy Davis will miss the opening-round A-League Women's match against Canberra United on Sunday due to a foot issue, marking just the second game she has missed in her 13-season career.
Davis, 31, had a record streak of 132 consecutive appearances ended two years ago by a foot infection caused by an allergic reaction to a cream. It is understood that both feet have been affected this time.
With a bye in round two, the club hopes Davis will return for the round-three clash against Wellington Phoenix on November 16.
New coach Stephen Hoyle, coaching in the A-League for the first time, expressed excitement about the new-look Jets, which include the return of striker Melina Ayres and four New Zealand imports.
“The girls have put together a good pre-season and now I'm interested to see what that looks like in a competitive fixture,” Hoyle said.
The Jets, who finished second-last last season after conceding a league-high 53 goals, will rely on Ayres and young talent like Josie Allan to boost their attack.
