Jack Ginnivan has emerged as a genuine target for the Tasmania Devils, with the incoming AFL club expressing interest in the Hawthorn star. 7NEWS reporter Xander McGuire revealed the Devils have Ginnivan “on their whiteboard” as they build their inaugural squad for their 2028 entry into the competition.
Devils’ Interest Confirmed
“I can tell you tonight that Jack Ginnivan is on the whiteboard of the Tassie Devils,” McGuire said on The Agenda Setters. “He’s a player that they’re interested in. Obviously there’s the Finn O’Sullivan’s and the Sam Lalor’s that they’re really pushing hard for. Ginnivan hasn’t got to that stage yet, but they have expressed an interest in him.”
The potential move makes strategic sense on multiple levels. Ginnivan’s contract expires in 2027, perfectly aligning with Tasmania’s debut season the following year. Crucially, Derek Hine, the Devils’ head of recruiting, originally recruited Ginnivan to Collingwood, providing an existing relationship that could prove pivotal in negotiations.
Social Capital and Street Cred
McGuire suggested Tasmania needs more than just on-field talent to attract young players to the Apple Isle. “They need someone that’s got the three S’s. Social capital, social media, and a bit of street cred,” he explained. “They need someone that signals to all the young players in the AFL. Tassie is cool. Tassie is fun. Tassie has a great nightlife.”
With Ginnivan’s significant social media presence and profile, he could be the perfect ambassador to help change perceptions about relocating to Tasmania. “Jacob Gaynor is the social media guy. He’ll have a ball with him. He’s already got the long sleeves,” McGuire added.
Ginnivan is enjoying an outstanding season for the Hawks, averaging just under 20 possessions a game as he spends more time up on the wing and through the midfield. The 23-year-old has also impressed with his maturity, both on the field and off it.
